Position Summary Field Responsibilities

Patrol designated areas and radio or phone UCPD Dispatch to advise of suspicious or criminal activity, or life‑threatening circumstances. (E)

Serve as a communication link between the campus community and University Police, fire, and medical personnel. (E)

Provide safety and security to the UCLA community including students, staff, faculty, and visitors by deterring crime. (E)

Proactively monitor alarm and television systems. (E)

Operate and monitor two‑way radio to communicate with police officers and other personnel. (E)

Complete all logs, as required, for each shift worked. (E)

Monitor and respond to emails daily. (E)

Question and/or escort unauthorized persons found on property. (E)

Prepare incident reports for the immediate supervisor. (E)

Respond to reports of malfunctioning equipment, determine necessary course of action to maintain operation of affected unit(s) and reports issues to supervisor. (E)

Participate in regular drills and practice sessions for fire, earthquake, evacuation, first aid/CPR/AED and other emergency situations. (E)

Emergency Responder: respond to all emergencies within the assigned area(s). (E)

Assist in the supervision of evacuations, search and rescue operations in the event of an actual emergency; maintain order among the public and UCLA staff. (E)

Attend required training in emergency preparedness. (E)

Perform all other emergency preparation duties as assigned. (E)

Perform other duties as required and assigned. (E)

Miscellaneous

Work mandatory assigned shifts in emergencies. (E)

Maintain job knowledge sufficient to work regular or overtime in multiple locations. (E)

Record hours via time punches and job assignments for each shift accurately. (E)

Maintain all required training levels and certifications. (E)

Attend scheduled general meetings of all security employees. (M)

Maintain familiarity with all posted notices or other official communications regarding security issues or problems for assigned areas.

Qualifications

Skill in interacting diplomatically with the public in a high volume, continuous public contact setting. (Required)
Ability to assess a problematic or emergency situation and plan/execute an appropriate solution in a quick manner. (Required)
Ability to independently resolve issues working within a set of policies and procedures. (Required)
Ability to relay information, either in writing or verbally, in a professional manner, in order to write reports or relay information to the public or to the organization and its representatives. (Required)
Ability to walk and/or sit continuously for at least 3 hours consecutively. (Required)
Ability to hear and see to identify life threatening or criminal circumstances and communicate that information over a two‑way police radio. (Required)
Ability to maintain equanimity in the face of resistance, indifference or hostility. (Required)
Skill in working independently and following through on assignments and duties with minimal direction. (Required)
Ability to attend to detail and follow through on all assigned duties and tasks to completion in a proscribed period of time. (Required)
Ability to adhere to all scheduling requirements. (Required)

Guard Card from California Bureau of Security and Investigation Services (BSIS). (Required)
