Assistant Teaching Professor in Chemistry

Position

Description:

The Department of Chemistry at New Mexico Tech invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor. This faculty position is focused on teaching chemistry courses, coordinating and supervising undergraduate teaching laboratories, and maintaining the department’s instrumentation. The appointment is for a highly motivated individual who values excellence in teaching, mentoring, and laboratory management. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications. The preferred start date is the Fall 2026 semester.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach selected lecture courses across general chemistry and advanced subfields.
  • Direct, coordinate, and supervise undergraduate teaching laboratories in general, inorganic, organic, physical, analytical, biochemistry, and other areas.
  • Assist the department with curriculum development, assessment, and integration of modern instrumentation into the curriculum.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to teaching assistants, undergraduate students, and lab managers.
  • Oversee safety protocols, training, and supervision of teaching assistants, ensuring compliance with institutional, state, and federal safety regulations.
  • Maintain and upgrade departmental equipment and instrumentation.
Department Description

The department’s teaching and research strengths lie in biomedical chemistry, electrochemistry, and atmospheric/environmental chemistry. Our institution values excellence in teaching, and a successful candidate will demonstrate strong enthusiasm for mentoring and educating students at all levels. We have well‑established graduate programs, including master’s, accelerated master’s, and PhD pathways. Candidates should help us attract more students to our graduate and undergraduate programs.

Qualifications
  • A PhD in chemistry or a closely related field is required at the time of application.
  • Candidates are expected to have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices.
  • Experience supervising or teaching undergraduate teaching labs and mentoring teaching assistants is preferred.
