More details and application

The Position

Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship starting in October 2013 to undertake research in climate-based daylight modelling and its application to solve traditional, novel, and emerging problems in the day lighting design of buildings at all scales, from individual spaces to urban settings. The work will be supervised by Prof. John Mardaljevic (Loughborough University) and Dr. Francesco Anselmo (Arup, London).

The objective is to synthesize the disparate strands of CBDM research into a robust and authoritative modelling framework with well-defined stages, methodologies, and quality assurance procedures. CBDM has been applied to various real-world projects, such as day lighting for museums, but remains unfamiliar to many practitioners.

Given CBDM's evolving nature, one challenge is to capture this 'moving target' and shape its future development. The project will also align with the aims of two International Commission for Illumination (CIE) Technical Committees on CBDM and Day lighting, potentially impacting research and practice.

The candidate will collaborate closely with Arup and undertake visits/internships at their London offices for approximately three months over the course of the project.

Eligibility and Funding

The studentship is open to graduates from numerate disciplines interested in daylight simulation. The minimum qualification is a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent; a lower qualification may be acceptable with a postgraduate MSc and relevant experience.

Funded by an EPSRC CASE award, the studentship lasts 3.5 years, covering fees and a tax-exempt stipend of £13,726 for the 2013/2014 academic year, with additional top-up (~£1,000) per year and cost of living adjustments in subsequent years. Tuition fees will be paid at the UK/EU rate.
