Laser technologies are increasingly used in nuclear decommissioning, enabling faster, remote cutting of hazardous materials. However, laser–material interactions generate complex plumes of fine particulate and gases that present major challenges for containment, filtration, and environmental safety.
This PhD will advance the science and engineering of laser-generated aerosol behaviour and control, developing new approaches to capture emissions goal is to reduce contamination spread and improve the efficiency of nuclear decommissioning operations.
The project is delivered, subject to contract, in collaboration with United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory (UKNNL), the UK’s lead civil national laboratory for nuclear fission, delivering specialised nuclear science and R&D capabilities, providing direct access to real-world challenges, specialist expertise, and national nuclear research infrastructure.
MotivationThis project addresses a critical industrial challenge at the heart of modern nuclear clean-up. You will work at the interface of laser processing, aerosol science, and engineering design, developing both fundamental understanding and practical solutions.
You will gain hands‑on experience with advanced laser systems and particle measurement techniques, while working with experts from Loughborough University and UKNNL. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to technologies that directly impact safety, sustainability, and environmental protection in nuclear operations.
AimThe PhD aims to develop novel engineering solutions for the localised capture and pre‑filtration of fume and particulate generated during laser cutting.
Key outcomes include:
- Improved understanding of laser‑generated plume formation and behaviour
- Identification of physical mechanisms for particle capture and separation
- Development of local extract ventilation (LEV) and pre‑filtration systems
- Experimental validation of solutions under realistic conditions

Entry requirements:We seek a motivated candidate with a 1st or high 2:1 degree in engineering, materials science, or a related field. Experimental and data analysis experience is useful, but training will be provided. Above all, we value curiosity and a hands‑on approach to solving real‑world challenges.
Loughborough University has an applied research culture. In , 94% of the work submitted was judged to be top‑rated as 'world‑leading' or 'internationally excellent'. We are a community based on mutual support and collaboration. It provides a prestigious and inclusive environment for research, with a thriving doctoral community. PhD students receive generous additional funds to support individual development, including opportunity to attend conferences, and training programs.
