Staff Accountant – Canal Barge Company
The Staff Accountant is a collaborative team player responsible for accurate and timely general ledger accounting, tax and audit compliance support, and business unit financial reviews. The role provides service to internal and external customers while supporting the Assistant Controller and Accounting Assistant Manager and contributes to corporate goals.
Responsibilities- Maintain and reconcile assigned general ledger accounts, ensuring accurate and timely activity and recording of manual journal entries.
- Reconcile bank accounts, prepaid expenses, business assets and insurance claims.
- Support the Assistant Controller, Accounting Assistant Manager, external accountants and consultants for tax compliance, aiding in the preparation of federal, state and local tax returns.
- Prepare schedules and respond to audit inquiries for interim and annual audits.
- Participate in monthly closing of assigned business units by preparing revenue and expense accruals, reviewing results, confirming accuracy and identifying trends and variances.
- Document standard operating procedures and facilitate knowledge transfer between departments.
- Perform internal control procedures and special projects including data analysis and providing insights for management decisions.
- Work effectively with other departments to accomplish job functions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
- 2–3 years of accounting experience.
- Knowledge of U.S. GAAP and accounting controls.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); intermediate or higher Excel skills.
- Effective multitasker who can prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Quick to grasp new concepts and proactively acquire new knowledge.
- Excellent communication skills, comfortable with verbal, written and video conferencing tools.
- Strong team player, collaborative, yet capable of working independently.
- Creative thinker with problem solving and process improvement focus.
- Highly organized, disciplined and quality-minded, taking pride in work products.
