APPLY TO TAKE THE DISTRICT PROFICIENCY AND/OR THE INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT TESTS

The Talent Acquisition and Selection Branch (TASB) of the Personnel Commission on others District Proficiency (DP) testing for Individuals who need to satisfy requirements to become a Para-educator, for candidates who need to meet a high school requirement, and for Vocational Instructors. TASB also offers the Instructional Assistance (IA) test for Individuals who need to meet requirements to become a Para-educator.

Testing is held on a regular basis at various locations throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District.

3. Complete the Questionnaire.

5. Receive a Confirmation Email.

6. Receive Instructions on how to schedule the test within 48 hours.

  • Time limit = 1 hour 10 minutes
  • 60 multiple choice items
  • Testing Fee = $7 for external candidates
  • Candidates who are unsuccessful can re-test after 30 days
  • Assesses:
    Instruction;
    Classroom & Behavior Management;
    Student Observation and Assessment;
    Diversity/Special Education;
    Legal & Ethical Standards

REQUIREMENTS AND TESTING INFORMATION FOR PARAPROFESSIONALS

Based on the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and District Policy, Paraprofessionals must meet specific educational and testing requirements. Please see below for information about these requirements.

District policy and the Every Student Succeeds Act requires all paraprofessionals to have a high school diploma or high school equivalency recognized by the California Department of Education and one of the following:

  • Have 48 semester or 72 quarter units from a recognized college or university OR
  • Have an associate degree from a recognized college or university OR
  • Pass the Instructional Assistance Test and pass the District Proficiency Test

Individuals with 48 semester college units or more are exempt from testing.

Individuals applying for the following Classified positions must meet specific educational and testing requirements.

  • All Education Aide positions
  • All Educational Resource Aide positions
  • All Health Care Assistant positions
  • All Instructional Aide positions
  • Library Aide
  • Resource Assistant for Students with Visual Disabilities
  • All Specific Education Assistant and Trainee Positions
