Reporting to the Manager, Process Engineering, the Senior Project Development Engineer leads the development of projects within the site’s five‑year capital plan. The role encompasses identification, prioritization, and front‑end development of all capital projects before handover to the Project Engineering team for execution. This includes guiding efforts from concept through feasibility, ensuring alignment with site strategies and Nutrien’s long‑term objectives, delivering thorough technical and economic evaluations, and applying sound engineering judgment to support well‑founded project decisions.
WhatYou Will Do
- Accountable for concept development, including establishing project objectives, validating business justification, and defining potential options.
- Lead project feasibility analyses, encompassing options evaluation, cost estimating, preliminary scheduling, and economic analysis.
- Drive project prioritization and recommend changes to the capital plan, ensuring alignment with business priorities and identifying continuous improvement opportunities.
- Conduct timely engineering and technical studies to assess proposed projects, evaluating risks and potential impacts to operations.
- Participate in or lead Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOPs), What‑If analyses, Management of Change (MOC) reviews, and other PSM‑related safety assessments.
- Provide accurate and comprehensive design input and review for projects, ensuring effective coordination with area and site personnel.
- Research and apply emerging industry technologies, best practices, and lessons learned from Nutrien and peer facilities.
- Serve as project engineer for assigned projects, coordinating multidisciplinary teams to ensure design quality and deliverables.
- Support development and stewardship of the site’s long‑range capital plan, ensuring alignment with Nutrien’s corporate strategies.
- Collaborate closely with central engineering and technical services teams to strengthen project definition and execution readiness.
- Work collaboratively with the site project engineering team to ensure seamless transition from concept to execution.
- Perform special studies, duties, and projects as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.
- Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience in the chemical process industry.
- Demonstrated expertise in economic assessments, financial modeling, and project feasibility analysis.
- Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation or PMP certification considered an asset.
- Experience in ammonia or nitrogen‑based fertilizer operations is highly desirable.
- Proficiency with Aspen HYSYS and other process modeling software.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving capabilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and familiarity with engineering software tools.
- Proven leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with both company and contract personnel.
- Effective collaborator with the ability to facilitate cross‑functional teamwork and manage conflict constructively.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing needs.
