Job SummaryConducts fire protection engineering activities and provides oversight of the site fire protection program as the Fire Protection Program Owner. Identifies and resolves plant issues and acts as a liaison between engineering team and Operations and Maintenance departments as the Fire Protection System Engineer.
Responsibilities- Support site with expertise in fire protection engineering principles, USNRC regulations (including Appendix R to 10
CFR
50, Safe Shutdown), Industrial Risk Insurance requirements, NYS Uniform Code and NFPA Code/Standards. - Ensure physical plant and administrative changes do not adversely impact the fire protection program, including safe shutdown analysis and Fire Probabilistic Risk Assessment.
- Perform fire hazard analyses, including fire modeling, to assess impact of proposed changes or deviations on the fire protection program.
- Ensure fire protection systems are maintained pursuant to requirements; review surveillance and inspection results to optimize scope and frequency.
- Develop and present periodic reports to peer and station management on the overall health of the Fire Protection Program.
- Maintain fire protection program documents (Design Basis Document, Safe Shutdown Analysis, Fire Hazard Analysis, NFPA Code Conformance Review Report).
- Review proposed plant changes to ensure conformance with NFPA Codes/Standards, USNRC regulations, NYS Uniform Code, and fire risk insurance requirements.
- Provide oversight of the program to ensure compliance with USNRC rules and regulations, minimizing risk and consequences of fire.
- Participate actively in Entergy Fleet Peer groups and industry fire protection groups to review and implement best practices.
- Act as point of contact and lead for Fire Protection Program assessments and inspections.
- Develop, plan and coordinate special projects, corrective action plans, and improvement programs to address plant problems or regulatory issues.
- Control engineering costs through resource optimization and expenditure tracking within budget parameters.
- Resolve plant issues through liaison with engineering team and Operations and Maintenance departments.
- Support Maintenance and Operations in system troubleshooting and provide technical assistance for significant events or complex plant problems.
- Interface with Maintenance and Operations for cost-effective maintenance strategies.
- Support planning and prioritization aspects of the project life cycle.
- Implement action plans from senior team members and prioritize deficiencies via corrective action and work-management processes; support system configuration/design changes.
- Serve on outage engineering support teams; attend training and maintain qualifications necessary for required group functions.
Education: B.S. Degree in Engineering from an accredited program or equivalent work experience. A B.S. in Fire Protection Engineering or Fire Protection Engineering Technology is preferred.
Experience (per grade):
- Engineer II: 2+ years of experience (1+ year with master’s degree)
- Engineer III: 4+ years of experience (3+ years with PE/master’s degree)
- Engineer Senior: 6+ years of experience (5+ years with PE/master’s degree)
- Engineer Senior Lead: 10+ years of experience (8+ years with PE/master’s degree)
Skills and Abilities
Proficiency in fire protection engineering for highly protected risk facilities—including fire hazard analyses, fire modeling, performance tests, system failure analyses, probabilistic risk assessment, NFPA Code conformance reviews, and model building code assessments. Ability to interface with Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies. Technical understanding of nuclear generation principles desirable. Strong interpersonal, conflict, problem‑solving, and change‑management skills; excellent written and oral communication;
proficiency with Microsoft desktop software.
