job overview
beginning level work inspecting dwellings to secure compliance with laws, ordinances, and regulations governing minimum housing standards; and related work as required.
responsibilities- inspect dwellings for compliance with housing standards and related regulations.
- prepare written reports on findings and recommend corrective actions.
- collaborate with enforcement staff and communicate results to property owners.
- maintain accurate records of inspections and follow-up actions.
- high school graduation or g.e.d. Equivalency diploma.*
- either: sixty (60) credit hours from an accredited college or university.
* or: two (2) years of experience involving heavy public contact, general compliance, investigatory, or enforcement experience.
note: some positions may require a valid driver’s license. Applicants hired between april 1, 2025 and march 31, 2027 are exempted from the requirement to reside in orleans parish.
additional requirements- prior to appointment, the hiring agency is required to verify education claimed by the applicant to qualify for this classification. If selected for hire, applicants must provide original documents of their qualifying credentials to the hiring agency prior to their start date.
- a written examination, weighted 100%, will be conducted. This is an original entrance examination.
- domicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application as specified in the city ordinance. Residency requirements are waived for all positions vacant and advertised for at least 90 days.
- background check will be conducted; criminal history will not automatically disqualify a candidate. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation if applicable.
- all applicants must meet the minimum age limit of 18 years and must pass a working test (probationary) period of one year.
- substance abuse testing and a medical examination or screening will be required for original entrance probationary appointments, as per city policy.
- good moral character is required; forgery, misrepresentation of facts, or cheating on examinations may result in disqualification.
- applicants who are licensed to drive must have a current license on their person during all phases of an examination; otherwise, picture identification may be required.
- veterans and certain dependents may receive additional credit under the veterans preference program if submitted with appropriate documentation.
