Position: POLICE OFFICER (LATERAL) (CLASS CODE 7110)
Location: New Orleans

Overview

Police Officer: responsible for patrol, investigation, community outreach, and enforcement of federal, state and municipal laws. Additional compensation includes a $7,200 state supplemental pay after one year of qualified service, City longevity pay after one year of consecutive service, and educational incentive pay ($1,000 for an associate’s degree, $2,000 for a bachelor’s degree, $3,000 for a graduate degree). Colleges must be accredited by a regional accrediting authority recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Part‑time officers are also accepted; they work approximately 42.75 hours in a two‑week pay cycle with incentive pays pro‑rated based on hours worked.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct patrols to deter and detect criminal activity.
  • Respond promptly to calls for service, including emergencies.
  • Conduct investigations, gather evidence, and prepare incident reports.
  • Engage community members to promote safety and address concerns.
  • Enforce laws and ordinances, including traffic regulations.
  • Collaborate with other officers and emergency personnel; participate in outreach programs.
  • Work on rotating or fixed shifts, nights, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events; may be called to duty in emergencies; overtime may be required.
Requirements
  • Current P.O.S.T. certification or equivalent from a state board.
  • At least one year of patrol and/or investigative experience after academy and field training.
  • Minimum age of 20 years.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Good physical and psychological condition to perform essential job functions.
  • State‑approved G.E.D., high school diploma, or foreign diploma with evaluated equivalency.

  • High school diploma, transcript, or G.E.D.; college diploma from an accredited institution.
Automatic Disqualifiers
  • Conviction or plea of a felony, including violent and sexual offenses.
  • Conviction or plea of a misdemeanor involving violence or sexual offenses.
  • Conviction for civil rights violations.
  • Use of prescription drug in unintended manner within two years prior to application.
  • Use of illegal drug within five years prior, excluding marijuana.
  • Sale, distribution, manufacture, or transport of illegal drug.
  • Discharge from military service under conditions constituting a felony or disqualifying misdemeanor.
  • Discharge or forced resignation from law enforcement for disciplinary reasons.
Application Process

Submit applications before the closing date; late or excess applications will be rejected. The examination includes a report writing test, multiple‑choice reading test, and a human‑relations test focusing on judgment, public relations, and teamwork. Candidates must wait three months before re‑testing and one year after two consecutive failures.

Conditional offers require a qualifying medical test (x‑rays, psychological evaluation, optional stress EKG), background investigation, and, post‑conditional, urinalysis and additional screening. Medical examinations and substance‑abuse testing are mandatory for probationary appointments.

Veterans Preference

Veterans, disabled veterans, certain spouses and parents of veterans receive additional credit after submitting DD‑214 or other proof.
