Position: BUILDING INSPECTOR (CLASS CODE 2210)
Location: New Orleans

beginning level work inspecting building construction and repair to secure compliance with municipal regulations, and related work as required.

  • a high school diploma or ged.*

  • either:
    two (2) years (60 semester hours) of university or trade school training in an architecture, engineering, or construction technology curriculum from an accredited college or university
    * and one (1) year of full-time experience in architecture or building construction involving inspection, drafting, designing or building. Additional experience may be substituted for the required training on a year-for-year basis.
  • or: a bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, historic preservation, or construction technology from an accredited college or university.*
    or:
    a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from an accredited college or university*
    and
    an active certification by the international code council (icc) as a residential building inspector.
    * note: if appointed, employee must be certified by the international code council (icc) as a residential building inspector during the probationary period. No probationary period may last longer than one year. If employees are not certified by icc during their probationary period, they will be terminated and must wait one year from the end of their probationary period or receive certification to be considered for rehire.

    note: applicants hired into this job classification between april 1, 2025 and march 31, 2027 are exempted from the requirement to reside in orleans parish.

    domicile requirements for employment (sewerage and water board):
    domicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application**. Residency requirements are waived for all sewerage and water board of new orleans positions vacant and advertised for at least 90 days. Employees hired under this waiver remain exempt from the city's residency requirement for the duration of their employment at the sewerage and water board. (la r.s. 33:4076).
