Position: EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN, ADVANCED (CLASS CODE 5175)
Location: New Orleans

responsible specialized work, under the direction of a physician, in the recognition, assessment, and control of medical emergencies; driving of emergency medical vehicles (specifically ambulance type vehicles), transportation and care of patients to a medical facility, and related work as required.

  • possession of a current provisional or permanent national registry certification as an emergency medical technician intermediate.
  • possession of a current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (cpr) certification.
  • possession of a current unrestricted ems certification or license from any state participating in the recognition of ems personnel licensure interstate compact (replica), also known as the ems compact.
  • possession of a current orleans parish emt permit issued by the new orleans health department.
    original certification must be submitted to ems within the first 30 calendar days of employment.

if hired, employees must maintain all required licenses, permits and certificates during the duration of their employment. Failure to comply with any of the above listed provisions will result in termination.

lifting abilities
  • lift with 2 hands from floor to knuckles: 133 lbs x 2.
  • lift with 1 hand from floor to knuckles: 28 lbs x 2.
  • lift with 2 hands from floor to waist: 133 lbs x 2.
  • lift with 2 hands from floor to shoulders: 28 lbs x 2.
pushing and pulling abilities
  • push horizontally with hands placed between waist and mid‑chest level to generate a peak force of 120 lbs with two hands.
  • pull horizontally with hands placed between waist and mid‑chest level to generate a peak force of 120 lbs with two hands.
carrying abilities
  • carry with 2 hands at self‑selected height: 28 lbs for a distance of 250 feet.
  • carry with 1 hand at self‑selected height: 28 lbs for a distance of 250 feet.
threshold
  • must be able to negotiate a 24” step up while climbing in / out of ambulance.
stair / ladder climbing abilities
  • stair climb test: climb up and down a total of 13 steps.
  • step ladder climb test: climb up and down 10 rungs.
  • vertical ladder climb test: climb up and down 10 rungs.
carrying and stair climbing abilities
  • carry 28 lbs with 1 hand at a self‑selected height and stair climb (ascend/descend) 13 steps x 2.
agilities
  • stooping and twisting: from standing, perform alternate toe touches x 5 to each side.
  • kneeling: from standing, kneel on one knee, return to full standing and then kneel on opposite knee. Repeat kneeling test x 5, each knee.
  • sustained squatting: from standing, lower body into a functional squat position and hold posture for 30 seconds.
  • repetitive squatting: repeat squats x 5 reps.

this is a non-competitive original entrance examination in accordance with rule v, section 8.1 (b) of the city civil service rules.

domicile requirements are currently waived for the purpose of application.
