Location: Walker
Medical Assistant 1 - Adult Cardiology Livingston
The Medical Assistant 1 assists in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician. The role includes interviewing patients, obtaining vital signs (pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and recording information on patients' charts. You may be required to draw and collect blood samples, prepare specimens or swabs for laboratory analysis, coordinate patient flow, schedule appointments, procedures, tests, and referrals, triage phone calls, and communicate with patients and their families.
The position works under close supervision of the physician and clinic manager.
- Patient Care – Properly identify patient by requesting name and DOB prior to interactions.
- Ensure confidentiality of patient health information, and follow HIPAA regulations.
- Complete and document patient visit notes accurately (chief complaint, medical history, family history, vital signs, immunizations, allergies, medications, nutrition, health and wellness).
- Administer and document waived testing under direct supervision of the physician.
- Prepare, stock, clean exam rooms, and maintain supplies and equipment.
- Prepare and administer medications per physician orders and organizational policies.
- Assist with minor surgical procedures and handle specimens and cultures appropriately.
- Provide basic clinical care measures for all age groups according to clinical skills checklist.
- Coordinate patient flow to ensure physician efficiency and manage schedules and wait times.
- Instruct patients/families on diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition, and wellness using approved forms.
- Retrieve and send requested patient health information to authorized individuals timely, in compliance with HIPAA.
- Notify patients of test results, medication changes, and treatment plan alterations within 48 hours.
- Call medication prescriptions to appropriate pharmacy as ordered.
- Coordinate diagnostic testing with other healthcare providers per policies.
- Respond to patient/family questions and concerns appropriately.
- Adhere to corporate compliance, accrediting body standards, and ethical directives.
- Understand chemical hazards and access MSDS; respond to emergencies and document in safety system.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives (data gathering, trend analysis, process changes).
- Follow all policies and safety, quality assurance, infection control standards.
- Utilize equipment, supplies, facilities, and resources prudently and efficiently.
- Assume responsibility for continuing education and professional development.
- Use initiative to assist overall practice operations, including clerical duties when needed.
- Support practice events such as annual flu clinic, community health events, and job‑site projects.
- Assist with clerical duties (answer phones, file charts, check referrals, maintain referral database, verify benefits, coordinate paperwork).
- Experience:
Completion of a medical assistant program or 1 year clinical experience. - Education:
High School diploma or equivalent. - Special
Skills:
Computer literate; skilled in Microsoft Outlook, electronic health records, and other software programs. - BLS required.
