JOB PURPOSE & MISSION
Administers immediate, advanced patient care to sick or injured persons in emergency department environments in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and hospital policies. Performs job duties appropriately for the age population served as defined in the department’s scope of service.
Essential Job Functions include, but are not limited to:
Administers patient care to patients in the Emergency Department.
Functions in uncommon situations with the understanding of stress response and methods to ensure personal well-being.
Understands body substance isolation.
Functions with the understanding of medical-legal principals associated with emergency care.
Responds to emergent care calmly, efficiently, and promptly.
Recognizes the need to administer immediate, advanced life support in emergency department environments in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards.
Assesses the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures that follow.
Treats patients in emergency department environments in accordance with federal, state, local laws, regulations, and standards and in accordance with Baton Rouge General policies and guidelines.
Performs emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures, such as starting IV lines, applying splints, cardiac monitoring, conducting bloodwork, and managing equipment.
Performs advanced airway management including managing airway/ventilation equipment.
Treatment of cardiac dysrhythmias utilizing EKG interpretation and proper use of cardiac monitor with capabilities to provide transcutaneous pacing, synchronized cardioversion, and defibrillation in accordance with Baton Rouge General policies and guidelines.
Administers medications via the most appropriate route utilizing standing orders as provided on the appropriate protocol or under medical direction.
Provides and manages care of traumatic injuries including the use of all basic and advanced equipment.
Works under the supervision of a physician, adhering to established protocols and assisting other medical staff as needed.
Performs additional responsibilities and routine tasks as needed.
Documents and maintains accurate and thorough patient records of medical history and treatments provided.
Represents the organization while on duty at public events.
Will perform additional duties as assigned.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Experience
Required:
1 year experience as a paramedic
Education
Required:
High School Diploma or GED
Graduation from an approved paramedic program
Certifications & Licensure
Required:
State of Louisiana Paramedic License
Crises Prevention training within 6 months of hire
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) within 6 months of hire
NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) within 6 months of hire
MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) within 6 months of hire
Preferred:
Nationally certified Paramedic
Special Skills or Knowledge
Required:
Physically capable of performing job
Able to understand and carry out instructions
Able to transport assigned materials from building to vehicle and vice-versa
Dependable and motivated to complete duties without constant supervision
Excellent communication skills and ability to interact with diverse patient populations

HIPAA - Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: medical records, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, patient location, religious beliefs and/or public health records, medical records related to quality/data, patient financial information and/or 3rd party billing, patient-related complaints, research information, employee health records and/or employee prescriptions.
SAFETY - Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: incident reporting, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, administers medications, validates, transports, monitors or observes patients for procedures including infusion pumps, and monitors clinical alarms.
