Lab Assistant - Blood Bank
Ochsner Health

We have been serving patients since 1942, and at Ochsner we are committed to healing, educating and innovating. This role supports our blood banking department, performing laboratory functions such as phlebotomy, specimen receiving and processing, centrifugation, aliquoting, labeling, distribution, and execution of waived and moderately complex tests.

Shift Hours

Days – Blood Bank – rotating weekends.

Education
  • High School diploma or equivalent (Required)
  • Formal Phlebotomy Training (Preferred)
Work Experience
  • Experience working in a controlled environment with safety measures (Required)
  • 1 year Hospital‑Based Phlebotomy Experience (Preferred)
Certifications
  • Current Louisiana Laboratory Assistant or Laboratory Assistant Trainee license (Required)
  • Laboratory Assistant license must be acquired within 180 days of hire (Required)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)
  • Computer/data entry skills and proficiency with Windows applications
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Proficiency with laboratory software and equipment
  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills
  • Judgement and problem‑solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently
  • Basic math and stress management skills
  • Capacity to handle 30‑lb loads and perform manual tasks in a lab environment
Job Duties
  • Perform specimen collection (phlebotomy)
  • Process orders and set up patient specimens for testing
  • Execute patient testing and document results
  • Perform and document quality control activities
  • Order, inventory and restock supplies

    Adapt communication and procedures to individual patient needs
  • Complete related responsibilities as assigned
