Your role is more than a job. Delivering bundles of joy is one of the happiest experiences, and you help babies start healthy. As a Lactation Consultant you support breastfeeding initiatives, educate staff, and celebrate the experience for new moms and babies.
Responsibilities- Perform bedside lactation rounds, assess patients, and plan, organize, and deliver lactation management services.
- Communicate with physicians regarding lactation management through verbal and written reports, acting as a resource for clinicians.
- Evaluate patients’ response to the plan of care and modify it as needed.
- Follow up with discharged patients for ongoing support and assistance.
- Develop, implement, evaluate and revise breastfeeding policies and procedures.
- Assess educational needs of all breastfeeding and lactating patients and provide appropriate educational resources.
- Initiate, consult, and collaborate with patient education resources to enhance self‑care capability of patients and families, documenting activities.
- Participate in activities to maintain, expand nursing and lactation knowledge.
- Participate in decision‑making activities related to breastfeeding processes at the hospital.
- Demonstrate compliance with all state and federal regulatory and accrediting agencies (patient safety, infection control, HIPAA, etc.) and document per policies.
- Provide comprehensive lactation consultation, breastfeeding techniques, and education.
- Demonstrate understanding of nutrition and pharmacology related to breastfeeding, nursing processes, and newborn assessment.
- Interpret research for application into current breastfeeding practice.
Minimum Requirements
- Current nursing license to practice in Louisiana as defined by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification.
- At least 2 years of experience as a registered nurse.
- At least 1 year of experience in mother‑baby clinical care, antepartum or postpartum, or as a lactation consultant.
- Lactation consultant certification.
