Emergency Services Technician

Job Description

The Emergency Services Technician provides assistance to Emergency Room staff by performing approved patient treatments and procedures under supervision. The Technician participates in the admission, transfer, and discharge processes, assists patients during their stay, and helps maintain the cleanliness of the work area, following established guidelines and working under close supervision.

• Perform approved patient treatments and procedures (e.g., accucheck, catheterization, non-medicated enemas) under the supervision and direction of appropriate personnel and in a professional and caring manner.
• Answer patient call lights expediently, assist patients with personal hygiene and other activities of daily living (e.g., dressing, ambulation), and maintain an attractive, comfortable, and safe environment.
• Participate in patient admission, transfer, and discharge by greeting patients and their families, orienting patients to the environment, taking vital signs, and completing necessary paperwork in a timely manner.
• Provide safe care of patient clothing and valuables by accurately describing and securing items in the prescribed manner.
• Ensure the adequacy and cleanliness of patient linens, maintain supplies, and utilize sterile techniques in setting up sterile trays for surgery.
• Retrieve medications from the pneumatic tube system or pharmacy and deliver them to the nurse or secure location as directed by the nurse manager.
• Answer incoming telephone and intercom calls, relay messages appropriately, and use proper judgment regarding interruptions and paging.
• Assist in providing proper identification and care for deceased patients and comfort family members in times of sorrow.
• Keep the work area neat, clean, orderly, and safe at all times.
• Maintain adequate inventory levels by preparing and submitting customized requisitions for supplies and equipment, verifying receipt and proper distribution.
• Observe and adhere to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures, and follow safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Experience, Education, Training, Special Skills, and Licensure:

• None
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and Specialized Training
• Must meet one of the following criteria:
  Nurse Aide Certification;
  One year experience in an emergency medicine environment;
  Certified Medical Assistant;
  Louisiana state EMT license;
  Junior or Senior in an accredited nursing program.
