LUMCON, a program of the Board of Regents, is a statewide academic consortium focused on marine science to address environmental and socioeconomic challenges in Louisiana and beyond.

LUMCON offers unique marine science and educational opportunities, anchored by the DeFelice Marine Center, situated in Louisiana’s wetlands and near the Gulf of Mexico. The center operates a fleet of research vessels and is expanding with a new maritime research facility in Houma in 2023.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Roberts Lab of Ecosystem Ecology and Biogeochemistry (lumcon.edu/broberts, ) at LUMCON seeks multiple research technicians to support projects funded by NSF, BOEM, NASA, and NOAA. The role involves field and laboratory work studying coastal wetlands, estuaries, and shelf ecosystems, collaborating with lab members and external partners such as Dr. Marshall Bowles ().

Current projects include NSF studies on methane fluxes and dynamics in wetlands, a marsh mesocosm oiling experiment, and long-term research on wetland carbon fluxes, nutrient exchanges, microbial ecology, vegetation dynamics, and ecosystem responses to human disturbance, among others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • B.S. in biogeochemistry, marine science, microbial ecology, oceanography, or related field.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with database management experience.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with PIs, postdocs, students, and other technicians.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with analytical instrumentation such as nutrient analyzers, spectrophotometers, TOC/TN analyzers, elemental analyzers, and gas chromatographs.
  • Experience measuring biogeochemical cycles of carbon, iron, sulfur, and nitrogen.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Participate in field and lab work in wetland, estuarine, and coastal ecosystems.
  • Manage lab databases.
  • Collaborate with lab members and external partners.
