About this positionThe overall function of this position is to be responsible for the activities of a crew of Mobile Equipment Operators in maintaining/repairing roads in West Baton Rouge Parish, with the primary responsibility for the vegetation control on highway right-of-way. This position is located in the District 61/Unit 590/Port Allen of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Parish Highway Maintenance Superintendent for West Baton Rouge Parish.
The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. Incumbent must have the knowledge, experience and the capability to train employees. Also must be able to skillfully operate and maintain any light or heavy equipment owned and operated by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development in maintenance operations.
The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals and directives.
Class A, Commercial Driver’s License before appointment.
Four years of experience in the construction, maintenance, or repair of roads, bridges, levees, drainage facilities, wharfs, buildings, or grounds; OR
Four years of experience in the operation or maintenance of industrial or heavy mobile equipment.

Experience in any combination of the qualifying fields will be accepted.

Job Duties- Supervises, trains and assists a maintenance crew in routine maintenance crew in routine maintenance functions; some examples: pothole patching, initial repair of pavement blowups, cleaning or repairing drain structures, mowing, shoulder repairs, cleaning up litter on roadsides, tree removal and etc.
- Supervises all assigned equipment, servicing and proper up keep to minimize downtime to ensure reasonable service life and provide for safe operations of equipment.
- Supervise a maintenance crew in supplying them with proper safety equipment and makes sure that work sites are always signed properly.
- Prepares Daily Work reports, incident or accident reports and may assist in preparing payrolls.
- Conducts Performance Evaluation System sessions on subordinates. Counsels and rates employees within the unit.
Appointment Type: Probational or Promotional
Compensation:Pay scale for this position ranges from $24.10/hr to $43.37/hr
Licensing Requirements: A valid Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. The incumbent is required to maintain possession of a valid Louisiana Class A CDL while appointed to this position.
