English as a Second Language (ESL) Program Instructor

There are currently over eight thousand students in Jefferson County Public Schools who speak English as a second language. They come from dozens of different cultural backgrounds and nearly every continent. Culture and country of origin can profoundly influence a child's identity, life experiences, and learning, which is why it is so important for educators to become familiar with these various global cultures.

• Hourly Pay Range: $16.46–26.10/hr
• Working Calendar: 187 Days / 7 hours per day
• As per board approved salary placement rules.

Assists teachers in fulfilling the goals of the second language program by providing the appropriate language instruction to the students assigned to such classes. Assists in the implementation of education programs by providing comprehensive assessments, evaluations, and instruction.

• Bachelor's degree. Official transcripts are required.
• Three (3) years successful teaching experience.
• Demonstrated proficiency of two (2) languages, English and the appropriate language.
• Experience in working with children and parents with special needs, multicultural and multi-ethnic backgrounds.
• Knowledge of or receptive to philosophy, policy and methodology of the U.S. educational system.
• Effective communication skills.

• Associate Degree or approved equivalent training (64 college semester hours) and experience.
• One (1) year of successful experience with children.
• Demonstrated proficiency of two (2) languages, English and the appropriate language.
• Experience in working with children and parents with special needs, multicultural and multi-ethnic backgrounds.
• Knowledge of or receptive to philosophy, policy and methodology of the U.S. educational system.
• Effective communication skills.

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Passing Score on the Kentucky Para-educator Assessment or 48 college hours.
• Demonstrated proficiency of two (2) languages, English and the appropriate language.
• Experience in working with children and parents with special needs, multicultural and multi-ethnic backgrounds.
• Program specific certifications/training.
• Effective communication skills.
• If your highest education is high school or GED you must take and pass the Kentucky Para educator Assessment Exam. The exam is free and you have three chances to obtain a passing score.
