There are currently over eight thousand students in Jefferson County Public Schools who speak English as a second language. They come from dozens of different cultural backgrounds and nearly every continent, culture and country of origin can profoundly influence a child's identity, life experiences, and learning, which is why it is so important for educators to become familiar with these various global cultures.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program provides Interpretation and Translation services for the entire school district to help our schools/programs communicate effectively with limited English-speaking families.

Scope Of Responsibilities

Assists teachers in fulfilling the goals of the second language program by providing the appropriate language instruction to the students assigned to such classes. Assists in implementing education programs by providing comprehensive assessments, evaluations, and instruction.

Minimum Qualifications:

Instructor I Bilingual Associate
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Passing Score on the Kentucky Para-educator Assessment or 48 college hours
  • Demonstrated proficiency in two (2) languages, English and the appropriate language.
  • Experience in working with children and parents with special needs, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic backgrounds
  • Program-specific certifications/training
  • Effective communication skills
Minimum Qualifications:

Instructor II Bilingual Associate
  • Associate Degree or approved equivalent training (64 college semester hours) and experience
  • One (1) year of successful experience with children
  • Demonstrated proficiency in two (2) languages, English and the appropriate language.
  • Experience in working with children and parents with special needs, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic backgrounds
  • Knowledge of or receptive to philosophy, policy, and methodology of the U.S. educational system
  • Effective communication skills
Minimum Qualifications:

Instructor III Bilingual Associate
  • Bachelor's degree. Official Transcripts are required.
  • Three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in two (2) languages, English and the appropriate language.
  • Experience in working with children and parents with special needs, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of or receptive to philosophy, policy, and methodology of the U.S. educational system
  • Effective communication skills
  • If your highest education is High School or GED you must take and pass the Kentucky Para educator Assessment Exam. The exam is free and you have three chances to obtain a passing score. For assistance with studying for this assessment, click KPA Study Guide and/or sign up for the KPA Prep Class with JCPS Adult Education. You can sign up here and make sure to select “I want KPA classes” more information about the class can be found here.

    To schedule to take the KPA test with our Adult Ed department . Upon completion of scheduling, you will receive a confirmation email from Adult Ed with additional instructions about the location, address and parking.
