Overview
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) is in Louisville, Kentucky and serves as the largest Sheriff’s Office and fourth largest law enforcement agency in the state. Its approximately 250 sworn, 60 civilian and 75 volunteer Reserve Deputies perform its main duties of providing court security, serving court orders, and collecting property taxes. The members of JCSO also serve the community by supporting local charitable organizations and providing a positive presence that ensures the safety of residents of Jefferson County.
Position OverviewDeputies of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office are fully sworn POPS certified law enforcement professionals. Deputies in the Courts Division provide security for participants of Circuit and District Courts of Jefferson County. Deputies take custody of inmates while in the Courts and during transport throughout Kentucky. Deputies in the Operations Division also serve orders on behalf of the Courts such as EPOs, IPOs, Civil Process, Evictions, and auto vehicle inspections.
Deputies at JCSO do not routinely take calls for service, but are fully certified to assist in any law enforcement capacity needed to ensure public safety.
- Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire. Applicants may apply at 20 years of age.
- Must be U.S. citizen
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent
- Must have honorable discharge from military, if applicable
- Must not have had peace officer status revoked in any state
- Must not be prohibited from carrying a firearm
- Must not have been convicted of a felony – misdemeanors are considered on a case-by-case basis.
- No use of marijuana in the last 1 year, no use of illegal controlled substances in the last 6 years.
Must reside in one of the following counties within 90 days of employment:

Upon academy graduation, a 3 year employment contract is required by the graduate.

Hourly Rate $25.60;
Annual Rate $53,268.19;

Employees participate in the Hazardous Duty retirement under CERS offered the KPPA. JCSO pays 100% medical premiums for single coverage, and 90% for other plan levels. Competitive plans for vision and dental. Optional deferred compensation and life supplemental life insurance. $20,000 Basic Life Insurance provided.

Upon hire, recruits begin working in the courts performing on-the-job training while waiting for a spot in the academy. Recruits are sent to the DOCJT Law Enforcement Basic Academy located in Richmond, Kentucky. The academy consists of 800+ hours of instruction including both online (4 weeks) and an in person, live-in academy (16 weeks) where room and board is provided. Recruits may go home on weekends and holidays.
Law Enforcement Basic Training lasts approximately 20 weeks.
