The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) is in Louisville, Kentucky and serves as the largest Sheriff’s Office and fourth largest law enforcement agency in the state. Its approximately 250 sworn, 60 civilian and 75 volunteer Reserve Deputies perform its main duties of providing court security, serving court orders, and collecting property taxes. The members of JCSO also serve the community by supporting the work of local charitable organizations and providing a positive presence that ensures the safety of residents of Jefferson County.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Court Security Officer (CSO) Recruits of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office are hired to attend training to become a Certified Court Security Officer in the State of Kentucky. CSOs in the Courts Division provide security for participants of Circuit and District Courts of Jefferson County. CSOs take custody of inmates while in the Courts and during transport throughout Kentucky. In accordance with KRS 70.280, CSOs only have law enforcement powers on courthouse grounds and during transport of inmates to facilities in Kentucky.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire. Applicants may apply at 20 years of age.
- Must be U.S. citizen
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent
- Must have honorable discharge from military, if applicable
- Must not have had peace officer status revoked in any state
- Must not be prohibited from carrying a firearm
- Must not have been convicted of a felony – misdemeanors are considered on a case-by-case basis.
- No use of marijuana in the last 1 year, no use of illegal controlled substances in the last 6 years.
- Must reside in one of the following counties within 90 days of employment:

Jefferson, Bullitt, Hardin, Henry, Meade, Nelson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble - Indiana:
Clark, Floyd, Harrison
SALARY/BENEFITS
- Hourly Rate:
Start $25.57 - Annual Rate: $54,182.80

Includes $1,000 annual uniform allowance - JCSO participates in Non-Hazardous Duty retirement under CERS offered by KPPA

ACADEMY INFORMATION
Upon hire, recruits begin working in the courts performing on-the-job training while waiting for a spot in the academy. Recruits are sent to the DOCJT Court Security Officer Basic Training located in Richmond, Kentucky. The academy consists of 80 hours of instruction where room and board is provided. Recruits may go home on weekends and holidays that fall during the 2 weeks.
