This position is responsible for designing and developing sheet metal products, assemblies, and components while providing hands-on engineering support to manufacturing and production. The ideal candidate combines strong SOLIDWORKS and mechanical design skills with a practical understanding of how products are fabricated, assembled, tested, and supported on the shop floor.
Key Responsibilities- Design and develop sheet metal products, assemblies, and components using SOLIDWORKS.
- Create and maintain detailed 3D models, assemblies, fabrication drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), specifications, and manufacturing documentation.
- Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles to develop cost-effective, reliable, and manufacturable designs.
- Design components for sheet metal manufacturing processes, including laser cutting, punching, bending/forming, welding, and assembly.
- Apply appropriate GD&T, tolerances, material specifications, and manufacturing standards to engineering drawings.
- Work directly with manufacturing, production, and quality personnel to resolve design, fabrication, assembly, and production issues.
- Support new product development from concept through prototype, testing, first article, manufacturing release, and production.
- Review existing products and designs to identify opportunities for cost reduction, improved manufacturability, quality, and product performance.
- Manage engineering changes and maintain accurate revision control of drawings, BOMs, and product documentation.
- Participate in design reviews and cross-functional problem-solving activities.
- Troubleshoot product and manufacturing issues using structured root-cause analysis and implement practical corrective solutions.
- Work with suppliers and internal manufacturing teams to resolve component, material, and fabrication issues.
- Provide timely technical support to production and quality personnel to minimize manufacturing delays and disruptions.
- Balance multiple engineering projects, production support needs, and changing priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 3-5 years of mechanical design or product engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong proficiency with SOLIDWORKS, including 3D modeling, assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings.
- Experience designing sheet metal parts and assemblies for production.
- Working knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), GD&T, tolerances, and engineering drawing standards.
- Understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes, including laser cutting, punching, bending/forming, welding, and assembly.
- Experience creating and maintaining bills of materials (BOMs), engineering changes, and revision-controlled documentation.
- Strong mechanical problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with manufacturing, production, quality, suppliers, and other engineering team members.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on engineer who is comfortable spending time on the manufacturing floor and working directly with production personnel.
- Strong mechanical designer who considers manufacturability, cost, quality, and assembly requirements during the design process.
- Proactive problem solver who identifies design or production issues and follows them through resolution.
- Detail-oriented and disciplined in maintaining accurate drawings, BOMs, specifications, and revision control.
- Collaborative team member who communicates effectively across engineering, manufacturing, production, quality, and suppliers.
- Able to balance new product development, continuous improvement, and day-to-day production support.
