DutiesThe Registered Nurse (RN) Training Specialist executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care. The Nurse Ill registered nurse demonstrates performance and leadership that is broad enough to improve the care for a group of patients. The RN Training Specialist is responsible for the documented outcomes at the program or service level. Program or service level outcomes must be broad and complex and can be demonstrated at any organizational level within a facility, Veterans Integrated Systems Network (VISN), or Veterans Affairs Central Office (VACO).
Program is defined as a substantial coordinated group of activities impacting patients and/or employees. The Nurse Training Specialist focuses on individual growth and development in practice with increased levels of self-direction. The nurse brings principles and theory with limited application of critical thinking skills. The RN Training Specialist does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. In the performance of her/his clinical duties, the RN Training Specialist practices independent professional judgment working with staff and in an interdisciplinary team setting.
The ability is required to make independent decisions when working with the interdisciplinary team and remain an advocate for the patient. The Nurse Training Specialist is regarded as a clinical expert and role model in application of the nursing process and evidence-based practice to manage the complex care needs of specific patient populations. The Nurse Training Specialist serves as a clinical training resource for the nursing staff, applies principles of adult learning to plan and conduct training sessions to promote nursing staff development.
Completes employee educational needs assessment, competency verification, and assigned reports within specified time frames. Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice in the Emergency Department. Facilitates the development of unit preceptors including effective delegation and interpersonal skills. Coordinates unit based clinical orientation program for new staff, students, and preceptors. Individualize unit orientation to meet the needs of the staff.
Monitors nursing staff TMS and clinical skills completion. Under the direction of the Nurse Manager, utilizes performance metrics data to evaluate needs and develop training/education programs for improvement. Develops annual competency criteria and maintains staff competency verification documentation. Identifies the need for revision and evaluates the effectiveness of in-services, orientation, preceptorships, and all educational training programs. Demonstrates and role models effective communication skills.
Maintains and utilizes clinical competency in the management and care of patients. Promote a culture that is highly reliable, collaborative, and focuses on error prevention.
