As a key member of the Aquatics team, a Swim instructor teaches both youth and adults swimming techniques & pool safety, and is responsible for proactive communication and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The main purpose of this position is to provide a positive role model for members and to create a character-developing atmosphere.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Uphold the mission of the YMCA, and demonstrate behaviors that reflect a determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful, and welcoming nature.
- Must be able to remain alert.
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
- Ability to teach with patience and a caring attitude.
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
- Must be able to remain in water for long periods of time.
- Responsible for scheduled classes/shifts & for following appropriate substitute procedures.
- Arrive 15 minutes prior to class start time to set up and greet participants.
- Clean up all equipment and pool deck after classes have ended.
- Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required by the Aquatics’ Director.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum age of 15.
- Team player with personal commitment to the YMCA Mission, Philosophy, & Character Development Values.
- People-centered, service-oriented.
- YMCA Youth Swim Lesson Instructor preferred, but we will train.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Previous lifeguard experience preferred, but we will train.
- Must be able to swim and demonstrate strokes.
- Obtain CPR/AED and First Aid Certifications (within 90 days of employment).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Must be able to remain alert.
- Work in a wet/humid environment and come into contact with chlorine.
- Must be able to remain in the pool for extended periods of time.
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
- Environment may include indoor and/or outdoor pool conditions.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds.
- Noise level-High.
