An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. Externs will also have opportunities to enhance their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
The externship duration ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate. Students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. to view stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
