Job OverviewWith minimal supervision, the radiation therapist applies ionizing radiation to patients in accordance with the prescription and instructions of the radiation oncologist, following accepted standards of radiation therapy practice.
Hours & Location- 40 hours per week – Day Shift (Monday – Friday)

Lowell General Hospital – 295 Varnum Avenue, Lowell, MA
- Associate’s degree in Radiologic Science.
- Certification in Radiation Therapy from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART).
- Licensed by the Massachusetts Radiation Control Board.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- One (1) year of experience in radiation therapy.
- Three (3) years of experience in radiation therapy.
- Deliver accurately the prescribed planned course therapy with minimal supervision.
- Check prescription, consent forms, diagnosis, chart, patient identification photograph, and daily treatment times prior to delivering dosage.
- Explain procedures to patients to alleviate fears and apprehensions.
- Reinforce Radiation Oncologist’s advice regarding reactions and care of the treated area.
- Observe patients for any reactions secondary to radiation treatment and report findings.
- Prepare room and equipment for each patient according to prescription parameters.
- Escort patients to and from treatment rooms; transfer them safely between stretchers, wheelchairs, and treatment couch using proper body mechanics.
- Closely monitor patients during treatment via visible and audible communication systems.
- Assist in simulations with the Radiation Oncologist and in dosimetry procedures.
- Participate in patient chart conferences.
- Perform daily physics checks (machine calibrations) and report any malfunction to appropriate personnel.
- Maintain daily records of treatment received, total dose, and port films.
- Use IMPAC computer system for charge capture, scheduling, and checklists.
- Copy films and/or charts when necessary and perform minor clerical duties (phoning, scheduling, photocopying).
- Obtain outside films and/or reports as required.
- Maintain clean, orderly therapy department and laundry/linen area.
- Transfer blocks into treatment room and organize them according to guidelines.
- Maintain film file area in a neat, organized manner.
- Prepare technical aspects of patient chart and label simulation films accordingly.
- Prepare diagnostic procedures using sterile technique when required.
- Monitor accessory equipment for malfunctions and notify proper personnel for repair and maintenance.
- Frequent standing, occasional sitting & walking, lifting of 30‑35 lbs.
- Pushing, pulling, and moving stretchers and machines.
- Requires manual dexterity for fine hand manipulation of diagnostic equipment and computer keyboard.
- Hearing and vision sufficient to perform examinations and observe patients.
- Close contact with patients having contagious diseases.
- Exposure to radiation used to treat patients.
- Frequent contact with patients, physicians, patients’ families, and other personnel throughout the hospital.
- In-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology to evaluate laboratory data, past medical history, and pertinent symptoms.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Attention to detail for patient education, safety, comfort, and discussing clinical situations with physicians.
- Ability to concentrate for long periods under various conditions while treating patients.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and seek assistance when necessary.
- Good judgment and problem‑solving creativity, remaining focused and professional.
- Ability to respond to changes in the work schedule calmly and appropriately.
- Cooperation with co‑workers and management to ensure high‑quality patient care.
- Knowledge of handling blocks and proper use of all equipment.
- Knowledge of standard practice consistent with quality care.

Base pay ranges reflect the minimum qualifications for the role. Individual offers are determined using a comprehensive approach that considers relevant experience, certifications, education, skills, and internal equity to ensure compensation is fair, consistent, and aligned with our business goals. Pay range: $37.18 – $47.41 per hour.
