We are seeking a qualified Medical Coder to join our team at Lowell General Hospital's Oncology Department! This role is 100% onsite based out of Lowell General Hospital – Main Campus.
Job OverviewThis position reviews medical records to assure accurate specificity of diagnoses, procedures, and appropriate reimbursement for professional and/or facility charges. The coder effectively utilizes ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, modifiers, and other codes in accordance with coding guidelines. The coder communicates with providers and staff regarding missing information such as CPT, ICD‑10, and documentation issues to ensure proper coding and reimbursement. The role also involves reviewing denial and reimbursement reports, conducting audits, and performing pre‑ and post‑visit chart audits to ensure accurate code assignment.
Hours& Location
- Full‑time, 40 hours per week, day shifts, Monday through Friday
- No major holidays; position works on‑site at Lowell General Hospital

- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a medical coding certificate program
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- One (1) year of healthcare coding experience
- ROCC certification highly preferred
- Associate's degree
- Two (2) years of coding experience within a clinical specialty
- ROCC certification highly preferred
- Verify and abstract specific clinical and demographic data from patient records.
- Perform pre‑visit chart audits and post‑encounter reviews to ensure coding accuracy.
- Assign accurate Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD‑10 diagnoses, CPT, HCPCS, modifiers, and quantities based on documentation.
- Correlate information from various EMR systems, including Pathology, Radiology, and other consultations.
- Review reports with leadership to identify reimbursement changes and discrepancies.
- Review audit lists for coding/billing changes and denial reports.
- Identify and evaluate coding issues, summarize findings for leadership, and recommend actions.
- Mentor coders and assist in training new coders; research compliance and educate providers.
- Document special project work results and recommend revenue‑management opportunities.
- Answer and route telephone calls and assist with follow‑up actions.
- Attend meetings and participate in projects to ensure all services are captured through codes.
- Maintain good relationships with physicians, social workers, and office personnel to facilitate communication and improve documentation.
- Promote excellent customer service and communicate problems or opportunities to improve processes.

Pay Range$23.04 – $28.80 per hour
