Chair of Hospital Clinical Operations, Department of Ophthalmology

The Vice Chair of Hospital Clinical Operations reports directly to the Chair of Ophthalmology and provides strategic and operational leadership for all main-campus clinical activity across Mass Eye and Ear and affiliated hospital-based settings. This role oversees the delivery of inpatient, emergency, consultative, and perioperative ophthalmic care, ensuring coordinated, high-quality, and efficient clinical operations across all care environments. Consistent with the Department’s leadership structure, the Vice Chair functions as a central integrator of hospital-based clinical services, partnering closely with operational, nursing, and perioperative leadership to optimize performance and patient outcomes.

This role focuses on hospital-based clinical delivery and does not directly oversee ambulatory network operations, which fall under Regional Practice Operations. The Vice Chair is responsible for advancing clinical excellence, standardization of care models, and alignment across sites, while supporting the integration of outpatient, inpatient, and surgical services into a cohesive and high-performing clinical enterprise. The Vice Chair will have an academic appointment with Harvard Medical School at the Instructor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level dependent on experience and current academic standing.

REQUIRED:

Clinical Expertise:
The individual must have extensive experience in hospital-based clinical operations within an academic medical center, including inpatient care, emergency services, consultative workflows, and perioperative management. A track record of high-quality clinical care and active engagement in patient care is essential.

Leadership and Strategic Oversight:
The Vice Chair should possess strong leadership and organizational skills to integrate complex clinical systems and align diverse stakeholders across hospital, outpatient, and surgical settings. The ability to drive operational efficiency and performance improvement while maintaining high clinical care standards is crucial.

Collaboration and Communication:
Strong collaboration, communication, and systems-thinking skills are vital for this role. The individual must be capable of influencing without direct authority and effectively engaging with a variety of stakeholders, including clinical leaders, administrative teams, and operational staff.

Operational Management:
The candidate must be capable of translating strategic priorities into operational execution while fostering a culture of clinical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
