Position: Seasonal Maintenance Worker (MVO)

Summary

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay. The typical seasonal period for these positions is April through October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

Anticipated Entry on Duty:
April 2026.

Major Duties
  • Performs landscaping and grounds maintenance such as cutting grass (using industrial power mowers), debris and recycle collection and removal.
  • Assists in planting, transplanting, fertilizing, mulching, watering, and pruning under specific instructions and under supervision.
  • Uses, cares for, and accounts for various power and hand tools and equipment.
  • Performs simple masonry tasks such as replacing loose or missing bricks.
  • Receives, unloads, and delivers incoming shipments according to established procedures, and reports discrepancies and damage to others responsible for such items.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government or private motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required and must submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License, Driving Record and all certified driving records from all states.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • This position has a mixed work schedule based on the varying workload, and can change from part‑time to full‑time to on‑call as workload dictates.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old or, if 16 or 17, have graduated high school or completed a formal vocational training program or have an approval to work while in school.
Qualifications
  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (screen out).
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc.
  • Technical practices.
  • Use of measuring instruments.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials.

Examples of experience: performing basic maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, walkways, exterior structures, campgrounds, and related utilities in trade practices such as masonry, carpentry, gardening, plumbing, roofing and painting; performing landscaping and grounds maintenance with mowers, weed eaters and pruners; simple carpentry, plumbing and painting tasks; providing janitorial services.

Physical Demands

The incumbent may lift, carry, set up and handle tools, parts, equipment and materials that weigh up to or over 50 pounds unassisted. Must work from ladders, platforms, scaffolds and perform work or repairs in hard to reach places. Requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Must operate standard hand and power tools.

Working Conditions

Work conditions may be dusty, greasy and noisy. Exposure to fumes, electric shock, bruises, burns, scrapes and cuts. Must wear specified trade and craft protection clothing (hard‑hats, gloves, safety shoes and glasses, ear plugs, respirators and rain gear).

Salary Information

Salary range (Quincy, MA): WG‑4 step 1 $ 23.57 to step 5 $ 27.50. Salary range (Lowell, MA): WG‑4 step 1 $ 23.57 to step 5 $ 27.50.
