Custodian​/Caretaker

Position Purpose Summary

The role is responsible for performing janitorial duties and ensuring The Salvation Army Encounter Community Church Ministries and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards.

• Responsible for any combination of light cleaning duties to maintain defined work areas.
• Ensure the weekly upkeep of the facilities: empty all garbage receptacles, put garbage out for the designated garbage day and return recycling and composite bins when emptied.
• Vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all glass areas, windows and ledges using a ladder where needed, dust all offices and furnishings.
• Wipe down all tables, chairs, and door handles; check, clean, move, arrange, and dust furniture as required.
• If applicable, ensure kitchen cleanliness, clean and polish sinks, toilets and countertops, mirrors, and fixtures; clean washrooms (toilets, sinks, floors); restock washrooms and hand sanitizers.
• Distribute received material as required.
• Identify and report to supervisor any repairs that may require an external service provider.
• Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
• Perform minor repairs such as electrical (change light bulbs) and plumbing (unblocking toilets, troubleshooting flushing issues), wall paint, light furniture fixing and report safety concerns and major repair issues to supervisor.
• Spot clean accessible walls, strip and wax floors, spot cleaning, and shampoo carpets as required.
• Maintain the general upkeep of external property, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up and upkeep of storage shed.
• Salting and clearing of snow to the front sidewalks and all entrances.
• Lawn care at the Ministry unit.

Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling.

• Keep food bank area clean and safe by adhering to all health and safety standards recommended by Public Health and other authorities.
• Contribute to the overall safety of staff, volunteers, donors, clients, and guests (e.g., clear fire exits, clean spills; no obstacles inside or outside the buildings).
• Use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer.
• Report any workplace hazards, dangers, safety issues, injuries or illnesses immediately and ensure care is taken with all equipment and property.
• Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

• Working environment is typically in the corps building in generally agreeable conditions and some outdoor duties.
• Days and Hours of work: 10 hours per week.

• Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
• Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
• Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required, including Child Check (if appropriate).

• High School Diploma
• Related maintenance education/certificates would be an asset.

• Minimum 6 months custodial and/or maintenance work experience.

• Ability to lift an average weight of 25 lbs with a maximum of 50 lbs, on occasion where weights may exceed 25 lbs the assistance of another person is mandatory.

The target hiring range for this position is $17.00 to $18.08 with a maximum of $21.69.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
