Job Description

Upper School Teacher

Classification: Exempt

Reports To: Head of the Schools of Logic and Rhetoric

Purpose
The purpose of this position is to educate upper school students (6th through 12th grades) using classical methods and a biblical worldview in order to prepare students with excellence to diligently pursue God’s truth, knowledge and wisdom in order to winsomely and persuasively communicate their thoughts both orally and in writing.

Summary
The Upper School Teacher provides instruction in an educational environment where students defend a love for God’s created order as they explain the truth, goodness, and beauty of His world through methods consistent with the classical approach to learning. The focus is on teaching students how to form clear, eloquent arguments, and to communicate and defend these ideas via a written and oral thesis at the end of the senior year.

Classes are discussion-based with emphasis on sound logical and rhetorical principles across all disciplines. The teacher will lead, instruct, disciple, and mentor students in a manner consistent with the School’s Statement of Faith and the Portrait of a KPA Teacher, and partner with parents in the education and spiritual development of their children. The teacher will collaborate with other staff and pursue ongoing intellectual and professional development.

Supervision
The Upper School teacher receives direction from the Upper School Head, Assistant Upper School Head, and occasionally the department chair. The teacher must exercise judgment in keeping with the School’s philosophy, beliefs, and approved curriculum. The School Head or designee provides instruction, advice, direction and mentoring. Work is reviewed regularly.

Work Schedule
Teachers are expected to be on campus at least fifteen minutes before the start of their classes and five minutes after class dismissal. They will complete lesson plans, update grade books and attendance, and comply with policies in the employee handbook, including working additional hours outside of designated class times. Teachers are expected to attend professional development trainings provided by KPA and are compensated for this time.
