Reports To: Head of the Schools of Logic and Rhetoric
Purpose
The purpose of this position is to educate upper school students (6th through 12th grades) using classical methods and a biblical worldview in order to prepare students with excellence to diligently pursue God’s truth, knowledge and wisdom in order to winsomely and persuasively communicate their thoughts both orally and in writing.
Summary
The Upper School Teacher provides instruction in an educational environment where students defend a love for God’s created order as they explain the truth, goodness, and beauty of His world through methods consistent with the classical approach to learning. The focus here is on teaching students how to form clear, eloquent arguments, and to communicate and defend these ideas via a written and oral thesis at the end of the senior year.
Most classes are discussion-based with an emphasis on sound logical and rhetorical principles across all disciplines. The Upper School Teacher will lead, instruct, disciple, and mentor students in a manner consistent with the School’s Statement of Faith and the Portrait of a KPA Teacher. The teacher will partner with parents in the education and spiritual development of their children and collaborate with colleagues.
Continuous professional development is expected.
Supervision Received and Exercised
The Upper School teacher receives guidance from the Upper School Head, Assistant Upper School Head, and department chair. The teacher exercises judgment aligned with the School’s philosophy, beliefs, and curriculum. The work is regularly reviewed. The teacher supervises students and manages the classroom environment.
Work Schedule
Teachers should arrive at least fifteen minutes before classes and stay five minutes after. Responsibilities include lesson planning, grading, attendance, and policy adherence. Participation in professional development is expected and compensated.

Spiritual Leadership

Lesson Planning, Preparation and Presentation
- Understand pedagogical knowledge in a classical, Christian school
- Establish a classroom environment aligned with classical methodology and biblical worldview
- Develop and revise lesson plans and curriculum with approval
- Meet deadlines for lesson plans and grade updates
Student Learning
- Convey information using various modalities
- Use clear language and integrate vocabulary
- Explain interrelations of subjects within God's universe
- Provide fair grading and feedback
- Assess student progress regularly
Classroom Management
- Implement school policies and foster a respectful classroom climate
- Maintain a safe and organized environment
- Manage behavior according to the handbook
- Ensure safety protocols are followed
Communication
- Engage meaningfully with students outside class
- Maintain professional communication with parents and colleagues
