Position DescriptionEmployees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory research projects. Performs work independently and responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques.
Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive, carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances. Responsibilities include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and equipment, and for ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.

Major/Essential FunctionsThe position is to develop an optimized human cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (hCFTR) sequence for use in human gene therapy that maximizes biogenesis and gating efficiencies while minimizing protein length and non-native point mutations.
The project involves techniques such as molecular biology, cell biology, culturing of mammalian cells, Western blots, fluorescence microscopy, and cell-based assays, including ELISA and chloride channel activity measurements.

Preferred Qualifications- Experience in flow cytometry and the detection of fluorescence and luminescence probes is desirable. Experience with the CFTR literature.
- Knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, and nomenclature; knowledge of the theories and principles related to the research area.
- Familiarity with laboratory equipment and sensitive substances (such as CFTR cor rectors and potentiators) used in the experiment is required.
- Working knowledge of computers is preferred.
- Experience working in the area of the current research project and are well-versed with Excel, Chemi Doc, and Chemi Quant analyses.
