Medical Technician - Phlebotomy
Position offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The incumbent serves in the Phlebotomy and Processing section of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Amarillo VA Health Care System, covering Lubbock – Amarillo and Clovis facilities. The role includes specimen collection, processing, and testing to ensure accurate laboratory results for both inpatients and outpatients.
Base Pay Range$42,097.00/yr - $54,732.00/yr
SummaryThe position requires a Medical Technician to provide phlebotomy support across multiple VA facilities. Responsibilities include venipuncture, specimen handling, and coordination with clinical staff.
QualificationsApplicants must meet all outlined requirements by the closing date of this announcement – 01/09/2026. Key requirements include:
- Specialized experience in laboratory support, such as performing laboratory tests and examinations in chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, or blood banking contexts.
- Technical proficiency in phlebotomy techniques and patient interaction.
- Minimum of 2 years of education beyond high school related to the occupation, or equivalent experience that can be substituted for education.
- Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients. This is a selective placement factor and a prerequisite for appointment.
- Computer skills, customer service, patient care, quality assurance, and specimen collection competencies.
The work demands extensive physical exertion: standing for long periods, bending, walking, stooping, sitting, and stretching. Lifting will not exceed 10 pounds. The candidate must possess vision and manual dexterity to perform venipuncture safely.
Duties- Preparation of samples for testing—labeling, centrifugation, decanting, and allocation.
- Distribution, storage, and delivery of supplies and materials used for phlebotomy services.
- Cleaning and restocking of blood collection rooms and areas where collection trays and equipment are stored.
- Receiving phlebotomy requests using both manual and computerized logging methods.
- Recollection of patient specimens when they are inadequate or insufficient.
- Collection of additional samples as required for additional testing.
- Collection of timed specimens such as growth hormone, peak and trough drug levels, and special collection techniques such as blood cultures.
- Performing related duties as required.
- Work Schedule:
Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m – 4:30 p.m.
