Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Confer with the Medical Director and attending physician regarding residents assigned to you.
  • Consult with the physician concerning resident evaluation and assist the Director of Nursing Services in planning and developing nursing services for the resident.
  • Initiate requests for consultation or referral, responding to requests from the resident, physician, or nursing staff.
  • Examine the resident and their records to distinguish between normal and abnormal findings, recognizing early stages of serious physical, emotional, or mental problems.
  • Determine when to refer the resident to a physician for evaluation, supervision, or directions.
  • Perform administrative duties for assigned residents, including completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.
  • Implement and maintain policies, procedures, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Make written and oral reports/recommendations to the attending physician, Medical Director, or Administrator regarding resident status and care.
  • Participate in planning and evaluation of nursing service department policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the Garrison surveys (inspections) conducted by authorized government agencies.
  • Resolve complaints and grievances made by nursing department personnel.
  • Ensure nursing department employment actions are administered fairly and in compliance with Garrison’s Policy Against Discrimination, Harassment and Retaliation.
  • Assist in managing the infection control program, ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Assist in the development of preliminary and comprehensive nursing needs assessments for each resident.
  • Observe medication passes and treatments to ensure quality.
  • Administer services within the applicable scope of nursing practice, including catheterization, tube feedings, suction, dressings, colostomy care, blood draws, massage, and range‑of‑motion exercises.
  • Prepare and administer medications as ordered by the physician.
  • Review medication cards for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to stop‑order policies.
  • Chart nurses’ notes in a professional and timely manner that accurately reflects care provided.
  • Chart all reports of accidents/incidents involving residents.
  • Chart all changes in resident condition and responses to those changes.
  • Chart all communications with the resident’s attending physician regarding treatment.
  • Perform routine charting duties per established policies and regulations.
  • Ensure adequate stock levels of medications, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist the Quality Assessment and Assurance Committee in developing and implementing action plans to correct identified deficiencies.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.
