Position Summary

The Substation Apprentice supports journeyman electricians in the planning, layout, installation, testing, and repair of substation construction projects. This position is hands‑on and labor‑intensive, requiring the use of various hand and power tools and working in diverse outdoor environments. Substation Apprentices are expected to uphold the highest safety standards while learning critical skills to support their development in the electrical utility trade.

To accomplish this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation, each essential function satisfactorily.

Essential Functions
  • Assist with installation of electrical conduit, duct banks, switches, relays, and circuit‑breaker panels.
  • Hand dig ditches and holes as required for substation grounding and foundations.
  • Use hand tools (e.g., drill, screwdriver) and power tools (e.g., conduit bender, threader) effectively and safely.
  • Pull wire through conduit and assist with continuity testing using instruments like ohmmeters and oscilloscopes.
  • Help rig and set large high voltage equipment and install wire jumpers and protective grounds.
  • Operate machinery such as excavators and man lifts in energized substations (if certified).
  • Maintain a clean and safe job site in accordance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures and participate in job hazard analyses and daily safety meetings.
  • Communicate clearly with team members and other crafts to coordinate tasks and avoid safety risks.
  • Accurately perform basic math operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide whole numbers and fractions).
  • Participate in job‑specific training and take initiative in learning layout, reading prints, and identifying hazards.
  • Report any unsafe conditions, near misses, or incidents immediately to supervision.
  • Comply with company Code of Conduct, safety policies, and jobsite expectations.
Position Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Class A CDL preferred but not required. Must be able to obtain Class A CDL License within 6 months of hire.
  • Must pass a background check, MVR check, pre‑employment drug screen, and physical examination.
Experience & Skills
  • No Experience required.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and maintain a positive attitude, even in high‑pressure situations.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to follow instructions.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to different tasks, equipment, and safety procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems and linework materials is an advantage.
  • Must successfully complete pre‑employment screening: background check, drug test, MVR (as applicable).
