Position Information

TxDOT's Fleet Operations Division is looking for an Equipment Mechanic I, II or III based in Lubbock, TX. We have a workforce of over 13,000 employees statewide and offer tools, potential recruitment bonuses, and company‑sponsored CDL training.

Salaries range by level:

  • Equipment Mechanic I: $50,000 - $61,130
  • Equipment Mechanic II: $50,000 - $71,055
  • Equipment Mechanic III: $55,000 - $81,351
The level will be determined based on experience, education, skill, and business needs.

Work Location:

Lubbock District Headquarters, 135 S. Laton Road, Lubbock, 79404. Travel:
Yes, 25 % of the time. Shift: Day (Mon‑Fri 7:30‑4:00). Onsite.

Responsibilities

  • Perform repair, maintenance, and inspection of fleet vehicles and equipment, including heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction.
  • Adjust brakes and replace parts (air brakes, anti‑locking systems).
  • Analyze computer diagnostic data and complete repair order paperwork.
  • Check lighting and wiring for proper function.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and quality assurance on motor vehicles/equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles for use, ensuring safety features are present.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Use diagnostic analyzer systems for complex diagnostics.
  • Maintain accurate data in the fleet information management system.
  • Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • For Equipment Mechanic II:
    Train less experienced technicians.
  • For Equipment Mechanic III:
    Lead and train technicians; step in as Shop Coordinator in absence.
  • Travel to other shops throughout the state as required.
Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

  • Equipment Mechanic I – 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics.
  • Equipment Mechanic II – 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics.
  • Equipment Mechanic III – 7 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics.
  • Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • Certificates of completion from a Technical Training Institute may substitute one year of experience for each year of experience.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license. Must drive a state vehicle.
  • Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required or to be obtained within 120 calendar days from course registration. Two attempts allowed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL).
Equipment Mechanic I Competencies
  • Proficient in hand and power tools, diesel, gasoline, CNG, and LPG engine repair.
  • Diagnose and repair equipment, including electronic and mechanical components.
  • Proficient in computer use and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics.
  • Follow safety standards.
  • Communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of automatic and manual transmission repair.
  • Calibrate electronic and mechanical components.
  • Brake repair skills (anti‑locking, mechanical, air, hydraulic).
  • Diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications.
Equipment Mechanic II & III Competencies (in addition to I)
  • Extensive knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Expert brake repair skills.
  • Expert troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of electronic/mechanical components.
  • Coordination of labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Reading and interpreting repair contracts.
  • (III only) Expert diagnostic skills with automotive and diesel computer applications.
