Job Summary
The overall purpose of the Certified Medication Aide position is to administer oral and topical medications to patients/residents. The individual must perform these tasks as ordered by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations. Additionally, routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort and well-being of the patients/residents must be performed.
Qualifications- State certification as a Nursing Assistant mandatory.
- State approved medication administration certification (where required).
- Ability to read, write, and speak the English language.
- Administers medications as ordered by a physician under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with state and federal regulations and facility policy.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the five rights of medication administration.
- May take and record vital signs of patients/residents as assigned or when required by certain medications.
- Records the administration of medications and/or treatments appropriately.
- Observes for and reports any reactions or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse or the appropriate shift.
- Administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and facility policy.
- Documents reason for and response to PRN medications in a timely manner.
- May dispense narcotics and must account for them under the supervision of the licensed or charge nurse per facility policy.
- Properly secures medication carts and medication rooms per state and federal regulations and facility policy.
- Attends facility education in–services.
- May make observation rounds under the supervision of the licensed nurse or charge nurse on the shift.
- May supervise nursing assistants or orderlies as assigned by the charge nurse on the shift.
- Ensures that medication rooms, medication carts, and medication refrigerators are kept clean and well organized.
- Ensures that any expired medications are removed for destruction per facility policy and procedures.
- Attends quality assurance meetings as requested.
- Function as a team leader and role model.
- Has reviewed Cantex Continuing Care Networks clinical policies and procedures for abuse prevention and understands employee responsibilities to enforce them.
- Responsible for assuring patient or resident safety.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
