The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) is offering a PhD position in Microtechnology and Micromechanics with applications in biomedical microfluidics at the Institute of Digital Technologies for Personalized Healthcare (Me Di Tech ), within the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI), based in Lugano. The degree of employment is 100%, with a contract starting on 01.09.2026, or on a mutually agreed date.
The research activity is part of an advanced project aimed at developing modular incubation systems and microfluidic platforms for Organ-on-Chip applications, within the context of personalized medicine and high‑tech experimental systems.
Responsibilities- Conduct applied research in the design, modelling, and development of microbioreactors and microfluidic systems for biomedical applications.
- Perform precision micromechanical design of miniaturized incubation chambers, modular supports, and fluidic interfaces.
- Develop and optimize microfluidic circuits for biological fluids, including CFD analysis and simulation of flow and transport phenomena.
- Select, characterize, and validate biocompatible materials (polymers, glass, silicones) and microfabrication techniques (soft lithography, bonding, replica moulding).
- Design and build prototypes and experimental test benches.
- Carry out functional and biological validation of developed systems in collaboration with academic and clinical partners.
- Collaborate with the electronics team to integrate control and monitoring systems.
- Prepare technical documentation and write scientific publications.
- Technical background and skills:
- Master MSE or equivalent Master’s degree (minimum 90 ECTS) in mechanical engineering, microtechnology, mechatronics, materials engineering, or related fields.
- Competence in micromechanical design and CAD/CAE/CFD modelling (preferably Siemens NX, ANSYS, or equivalent).
- Knowledge of microfluidics principles and microfabrication techniques.
- Experimental experience with mechanical or microfluidic laboratory equipment (microscopes, syringe pumps, flow systems, measurement instruments).
- Familiarity with materials and technologies suitable for biomedical applications.
- Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams.
- Hands‑on attitude toward experimentation and prototyping.
- Strong interest in applied research and technological development.
- Good communication skills in spoken and written English.
- Experience in biomedical devices or Organ-on-Chip systems.
- Knowledge of advanced microfluidic simulation.
- Familiarity with experimental characterization techniques and data analysis.
- Fixed‑term contract.
- Fully funded PhD.
- Interdisciplinary and international working environment.
- Collaboration with academic and research partners.
- Salary in line with Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) standards.
- Participation in conferences, workshops, and scientific activities.
- Opportunities to develop advanced skills in microtechnology and biomedical microfluidics.
In all its activities, SUPSI ensures an inclusive, accessible, and respectful study and work environment that values diversity, with the aim of providing high‑quality higher education for all. More information on diversity and inclusion is available at the relevant link.
