Position Overview

This post is based in the Dermatology department located in Arndale House, The Poynt, Luton (Luton and Dunstable University Hospital). The post holder will play a full part in the work of the department and will be expected to provide leadership to maintain and develop Dermatology services. The post holder will share equitable responsibilities with professional colleagues, contribute to governance, provide Dermatology cover for in‑patient referrals (no on‑call rota), cover for colleagues during absence, and have ongoing responsibility for patients and department functioning.

They will attend the Local Cancer Multidisciplinary Team meetings and be encouraged to develop a special interest aligned with the departmental strategy, such as dermatological surgery, contact dermatitis or phototherapy. The post will involve working with local managers, general practitioners and other medical peers, and will include active participation in clinical supervision of Specialist Registrars and medical students from UCLH.

Duties
  • Maintain highest clinical standards in managing all patients presenting to the Trust.
  • Share management of adult and paediatric dermatology patients with colleagues in the Directorate.
  • Provide clinical supervision of junior doctors.
  • Support the Dermatology clinical nurse specialists.
  • Actively participate in both Directorate and Trust matters related to Clinical Governance and audit.
  • Take responsibility for continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Train and supervise junior medical staff in clinics and MDTs.
  • Carry out audit projects and may undertake research.

Clinical Effectiveness (Essential)

  • Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD.
  • Experience of guideline appraisal.
  • Participation in relevant local audits.
  • Ability to interpret and apply clinical research.

  • Participation in relevant national audits.

Teaching (Essential)

  • Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.
  • Understanding of learner‑centred teaching.

  • Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course.

  • Ability to cooperate in a democratic team environment.

  • Commitment to CME/CPD.

Clinical Governance (Essential)

  • Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.

Personal Circumstances (Essential)

  • Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for on‑call emergencies.
  • Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance.
  • Satisfactory DBS clearance.

Qualifications (Essential)

  • Medical Degree.
  • Relevant postgraduate qualification MRCP or equivalent.
  • SCE Dermatology (required if trained post 2009).

Qualifications (Desirable)

  • MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research.

Registration (Essential)

  • Full GMC Registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences).
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or CESR – portfolio pathway (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying).

Clinical Experience (Essential)

  • Excellent all‑round experience of DGH work.
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in dermatology.
  • Competence in management of acute and chronic skin disorders.
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and deliver service without direct supervision.
