Stoma Care Nurse (Fixed Term Contract/Secondment)

An exciting opportunity for a Band 6 registered nurse to join the Stoma Care Team and enhance their knowledge and skills in supporting patients who have a stoma.
We are looking for an innovative and passionate professional who is committed to making a difference in caring for patients following life‑changing surgery and helping them through subsequent pathways.
Main Duties of the Role- Act as the patient’s advocate in decision making regarding stoma formation and underlying diagnosis including cancer and benign disease.
- Develop an understanding of surgical procedures and the associated nursing needs of the patient.
- Manage own caseload under the supervision of the Stoma Care CNS, within the hospital and community setting.
- Provide emotional support, education and information to patients/carers and their families regarding stoma formation.
- Provide accurate information and education to nursing/medical staff, patients/carers and families regarding stoma formation.
- Act in a consultation capacity within the specialist field, to all nursing, medical and other health professionals as relevant within the Trust, giving clinical advice, guidance and support.
- Teach and support patients to become independent and competent in managing their stoma to ensure a positive patient experience prior to a safe discharge.
- Support the running of the nurse‑led clinics in both hospital and community settings and undertake training to become independent in running the clinics.

Job ResponsibilitiesThe post holder will provide support to the current Stoma Care Service in delivering expert stoma nursing support and an advisory service. They will assess, implement and evaluate patients who require stoma formation, working across Luton & Dunstable Hospital and the surrounding community settings. They will assist in supervising nursing staff in the defined clinical area to maintain high standards of care, and will participate in teaching sessions, audit projects and service development in liaison with the Stoma Care Team to provide a professional, evidence‑based practice.
They will act as a role model and provide supervision to nursing staff in all clinical areas.

All new staff will be subject to a probationary period covering the first 6 months in post. Travel between hospital sites may be required.
Person Specification Qualifications- Evidence of professional development.
- Relevant stoma care or community experience.
- Experience working in a general surgical environment, with stoma care and/or colorectal surgery.
- Evidence of leadership skills.
- Experience teaching student nurses and HCAs.
- Community experience.
- Good knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the abdomen.
- Basic stoma care knowledge.
- Leadership and organisational skills.
This post requires a Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 check. The Disclosure and Barring Service will be required to check for any previous criminal convictions.
