Join a mission-driven health system and play a key role in shaping the future of neonatal care in Central Virginia. Centra Health is seeking a Board-Certified/Board-Eligible Neonatologist to join our highly respected Level III NICU team at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, VA. This is an exciting opportunity to step into a cohesive, deeply rooted unit with an exceptional reputation in the community — and to help lead its next era of growth, including a brand-new patient tower featuring couplet care rooms.

Responsibilities
  • Schedule:

24-hour shifts; in-house from ~8/9am through early afternoon, remainder on call
  • Call:
Shared model with expectation of 1:3 as team grows (low call burden with highly autonomous NNP support)
  • Team Model: 1 Neonatologist + 1 NNP per shift
  • NNPs conduct daily rounds; neonatologist provides leadership, assessments, and plan collaboration
  • Supported by highly tenured nursing staff, respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, and more
  • Unit:
Licensed for 13 beds, 4 pods | Avg. census: 10-13
  • Accuity:
Level III (B) – 26 weeks and up, ventilation, no surgical cases onsite
  • Case Types / Volumes:
Care for a wide range of neonatal conditions within a busy Level III NICU; delivery room coverage for at-risk infants + average of 2,600 deliveries annually
  • Procedures:
Umbilical lines, intubations as needed, occasional chest tubes
  • Deliveries:
Vaginal and C-Section in a Baby Friendly labor and delivery environment
  • NET Team:
Lead neonatal emergency response and assist with transport as needed
  • Collaboration:

Strong referral partnership with UVA & Carilion with robust mentorship and transport teams
  • Culture:
Strong community support — low turnover, neonatal birthday celebrations, foundation-sponsored events
  • Growth & Innovation:
Participate in statewide collaboratives (Late Preterm, Substance-Exposed Infant, QI initiatives)
  • Future Expansion:
New patient tower coming — NICU will transition to couplet care rooms (increasing beds to 19)
  • Start Date:

Target of April 2026 (flexible to allow for onboarding/credentialing)
  • Visa Support: J-1 and H-1B candidates welcomed

A successful candidate is collaborative, innovative, and excited to become part of a team that values family-centered care and continuous improvement.
