Job Description

Centra Health is seeking a Board-Certified/Board-Eligible Neonatologist to join our highly respected Level III NICU team at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, VA. This is an exciting opportunity to step into a cohesive, deeply rooted unit with an exceptional reputation in the community — and to help lead its next era of growth, including a brand-new patient tower featuring couplet care rooms.
Responsibilities- Schedule:
24-hour shifts; in-house from ~8/9am through early afternoon, remainder on call - Call:
Shared model with expectation of 1:3 as team grows (low call burden with highly autonomous NNP support) - Team Model: 1 Neonatologist + 1 NNP per shift
- NNPs conduct daily rounds; neonatologist provides leadership, assessments, and plan collaboration
- Supported by highly tenured nursing staff, respiratory therapists, lactation consultants, and more
- Unit:
Licensed for 13 beds, 4 pods | Avg. census: 10-13 - Accuity:
Level III (B) – 26 weeks and up, ventilation, no surgical cases onsite - Case Types / Volumes:
Care for a wide range of neonatal conditions within a busy Level III NICU; delivery room coverage for at-risk infants + average of 2,600 deliveries annually - Procedures:
Umbilical lines, intubations as needed, occasional chest tubes - Deliveries:
Vaginal and C-Section in a Baby Friendly labor and delivery environment - NET Team:
Lead neonatal emergency response and assist with transport as needed - Collaboration:
Strong referral partnership with UVA & Carilion with robust mentorship and transport teams - Culture:

Participate in statewide collaboratives (Late Preterm, Substance-Exposed Infant, QI initiatives) - Future Expansion:
New patient tower coming — NICU will transition to couplet care rooms (increasing beds to 19) - Start Date:
Target of April 2026 (flexible to allow for onboarding/credentialing) - Visa Support: J-1 and H-1B candidates welcomed

Qualifications- MD or DO with completion of Neonatology Fellowship
- Board Certified/Board Eligible in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
- Unrestricted or eligible for Virginia medical licensure
