Job DescriptionThe Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) functions under the direction of a licensed professional nurse. Under the supervision of the nurse, CNAs provide care appropriate to the patient population, meeting daily routine patient care needs. The CNA performs duties based on the unit care delivery model, collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to deliver care as outlined by the nurse, adheres to Centra's best practices for quality and service, creates and maintains a safe patient environment, and contributes to a healthy work environment.
The CNA’s practice reflects the laws and regulations for a Certified Nurse Aide as outlined by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Provides and documents patient care under the direction of the registered or licensed practical nurse, including activities of daily living and assistance with meals, bathing, ambulating, toileting, and turning and repositioning.
- Checks and records vital signs, and documents intake and output.
- Promotes patient comfort by answering call lights and communicating observations or patient needs to nursing staff.
- Contributes to safe and efficient admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
- Maintains patient rights to comfort, privacy, and dignity while providing care.
- Creates and maintains a clean and safe environment on the unit and within patient rooms and areas that protects patients from harm.
- Follows organization’s policies and procedures in care delivery and interactions with other caregivers.
- Handles medication delivered by Pharmacy or via pneumatic tube system, transporting to appropriate storage or qualified employee.
- Applies unit service excellence best practices when approaching patients, visitors, physicians, and colleagues.
- Uses resources (time, people, supplies, etc.) cost effectively.
- Participates in quality and performance improvement initiatives based on evidence‑based literature and unit metrics.
- Consistently practices Centra safety behaviors.
- Handles conflict resolution opportunities timely and consistently.
- Engages in professional development through self‑appraisal, earning academic credits, and attending educational programs.
- Certified as a Nurse Aide by the Department of Health Professions of Virginia.
- AHA BLS CPR Completion.
- At least 1 year of recent acute care experience.
- High School Diploma / GED.
- Clinical background within a Cardiology setting.
- Experience in Home Health or Hospice.

Position Variants Certified Nursing Aide – Resource Team / Centra Internal Travel TeamRequires at least 1 year of recent acute care experience.
Certified Nursing Aide – Stroobants- Under direct supervision of RN, performs patient care and other tasks in Cardiology clinic and monitoring department.
- Required:
1 year experience as CNA;
Valid Virginia Driver’s License. - Preferred:
Clinical background in Cardiology. - Travel expected 100%.
- Operates under supervision of RN, PT, ST, OT; provides hands‑on personal care and simple procedures; assists with ambulation, exercises, and medication administration.
- Must complete ≥12 hours of in‑service training each 12‑month period.
- Required:
1 year experience as CNA;
Valid Virginia Driver’s License. - Preferred:
Experience in Home Health. - Travel expected 100%.
- Under direction of RN, PT, ST, OT; requires 1 year experience as CNA.
- Preferred:
Experience in Hospice or Home Care. - Travel expected 100%.
