Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Individual must be willing to learn to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Tests, installs, repairs and maintains highly complex electronic microprocessor type traffic controlled devices (i.e. conflict monitors, control switches, relays etc.) on a scheduled or emergency basis;
- Utilizes various types of equipment to perform duties including bucket truck at a height of 15 to 40 feet;
- Replaces and diagnose defective electronic components;
- Inspects, cleans and replace lenses and frayed wiring, elevates and aligns signal heads;
- Monitors the coordination of signal systems and make necessary adjustment;
- Inspects and monitors contractor installations;
- Responds to emergency calls or unusual situations, performs on-call duty responsibilities;
- Responds to city-wide emergencies, such as snow, floods and windstorms;
- Drive city vehicles to perform essential job duties;
- Picks up and maintains parts/material inventory;
- Designs and builds special control assemblies as needed;
- Performs general housekeeping duties at Traffic Maintenance facility and storage areas;
- Serves as back up for entering work orders in Supervisor absence.
- Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to citizens may be assigned.
- When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
- High School Diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Electrical Journeyman or Master Electrician preferred
- IMSA Traffic Signal Level 1 certification or higher preferred
- Knowledge of Manual Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)
- A combination of training, experience, or education in Electronics, or a related field desired
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and an acceptable driving record according to City criteria;
- Ability to obtain a Class A CDL within the first 12 months of employment (paid for by the city).
- The successful candidate shall obtain ATSSA Flagger/Work Zone Certification within 6 months of employment (paid for by the city).
- The successful candidate shall successfully complete IS 100 and IS 700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to perform basic mathematical functions, and calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to diagnose and solve problems involving electrical and mechanical systems.
Interpersonal Skills
Tact and cooperation skills are required; communications involve both facts and opinions. Coordination skills, such as scheduling repairs with individual citizens and/or other City employees.

WorkEnvironment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
