Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
The City of Lynnwood Public Works department is seeking a Mechanic to join our Fleet Division! Our Mechanics work on a variety of things--Fire trucks, Police cars Dump trucks, Mowers, Sweepers, Automotive, Marine and small engine repairs!
Individuals in these positions perform specialized and skilled work involving the diagnosis and repair of various automotive and major pieces of light and heavy diesel and gas powered equipment, such as automobiles, police sedans, construction equipment, aid cars, motorcycles, sewer cleaners, sweepers, dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, fire pumpers, and other light and heavy equipment. This job description covers the following specific positions:
1. Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Entry Level, No ASE certifications required. Grade 217
2. Heavy Equipment Mechanic, ASE certified, CDL required. Grade 218
3. Heavy Equipment Mechanic, EVT Certified. Grade 219
This position is open until filled. However, first round of interviews will begin the week of September 8, 2025. Includes but is not limited to such essential functions listed below:
- Troubleshoot and determine defects and repairs needed on heavy and light duty equipment.
- Use lifts, specialty tools, and various automotive and heavy duty diagnostic equipment to inspect and evaluate vehicles and equipment.
- Perform tune-up work on trucks, motorcycles, and automobiles, with an emphasis on heavy equipment; assist Shop Supervisor in establishing and maintaining preventative maintenance schedules for all equipment.
- Accomplish scheduled preventative maintenance on all equipment. Set up warranty repairs with vendors.
- Order parts from vendors and manufacture parts no longer available.
- Accomplish major repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, gear boxes, motors and pumps, hydraulic systems and electrical systems; maintain diesel and gas powered light and heavy-duty equipment.
- Initiate and update vehicle maintenance records. Use various tools and equipment common to the trade such as ohm meters, vacuum gauges, tire changers, wheel balancers, lifts, A/C recovery/rechargers, and mig welder.
- Perform welding repairs and fabrication work on vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Install, repair, and maintain complex electrical systems.
- Repair vehicles and equipment in the shop but may be called upon to perform field repairs as necessary. Locate and transport vehicles needing repair or warranty work.
- Serve as Lead in Shop Supervisor's absence.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Grade 219 Only:
Perform work on fire apparatus as per EVT certification.
Certifications
- Employees who obtain and
maintain
ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Master Automobile Technicianand Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician certifications will be automatically placed at pay scale 218. CDL required. - The City will designate a finite number of Heavy Equipment Mechanic positions as being Grade 219. Successful candidates for Grade 219 positions must obtain and
maintain
EVT (Emergence Vehicle Technician) Master Ambulance and Master Fire Apparatus Technician certifications and have 2 years experience working on fire apparatus.
