Position: Public Safety Officer (Part-time)

Public Safety Officer (Non-Benefited)

The City of Lynwood is seeking a dedicated and motivated individual to serve the community. This recruitment establishes future vacancies and will be merged with current qualified lists. Work Schedule

This is a non‑benefited, at‑will part‑time position. Part‑time shifts may not exceed 20 hours per week, or 950 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30). Candidates may be required to work irregular hours, various shifts, weekends, holidays and/or on‑call status. The employee may have to work late evening hours and in inclement weather. No rights to employment;

the position may end at any time with or without cause or advance notice.

Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Lead Public Safety Officer, the incumbent performs duties in Code Enforcement, Parking Enforcement and Animal Control. Assignments may vary and may require evening and weekend work.

Responsibilities
  • Code Enforcement – Provides field and support service duties, acts as liaison with residents and businesses, assists in code enforcement efforts, provides information on home and business security, and ensures timely resolution of complaints. Activities include patrolling, observing violations, issuing citations, counseling residents, preparing reports and records, conducting community surveys, attending meetings, and coordinating with city departments.
  • Parking Enforcement – Patrols the city, enforces parking regulations, issues citations, arranges removal of abandoned vehicles, maintains records, answers citizen inquiries, responds to complaints, identifies vehicle owners, manages parking meter issues, and appears in court for disputes.
  • Animal Control – Enforces city/state ordinances on animal ownership, investigates cruelty and abandonment, patrols areas, captures stray animals for impounding, transports animals, assists agencies, prepares investigative and activity reports, testifies in court, and inspects animal facilities.
Qualifications
  • Ability to read, interpret and enforce municipal code regulations.
  • One year of responsible work experience enforcing municipal code regulations.
  • Experience in parking, code, or animal enforcement preferred.
  • Must complete a PC 832 P.O.S.T. certificate within six (6) months of hire.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish desirable.
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license with good driving record.
  • Acceptance of enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program.
  • Physical ability to walk, lift up to 50 pounds, sometimes up to 100 pounds with assistance, operate a vehicle, work in variable weather and noise conditions.
Special Requirements

Bilingual in English and Spanish is desirable. The incumbent must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license and a good driving record. Enrollment in the California Department of Motor Vehicles Pull Notice Program is required.

Physical Tasks & Environmental Conditions

The position requires frequent walking and operating a vehicle on city streets, with occasional lifts up to 100 pounds. Work is performed outdoors with exposure to temperature variations, noise, vehicle exhaust, and possibly inclement weather. The employee may work late hours and in wet or humid conditions.

This position is represented by the Lynwood Employees' Association/AFSCME Local 1920 (LEA). Candidates who require mandatory re‑enrollment in CALPERS based on prior public agency employment will not be considered for part‑time employment.
