Internship Finance Data Science & Margin Analytics

During your internship, you will investigate how artificial intelligence and advanced analytics can be leveraged to improve margin management and forecasting processes. You will analyze historical financial and operational data, identify key profitability drivers, and explore methods for detecting anomalies and predicting future performance. In addition, you will review relevant academic and industry research, evaluate predictive forecasting techniques, and translate findings into practical business recommendations and an implementation roadmap for finance stakeholders.

This internship is open to writing a master’s thesis. Potential thesis topic:
Artificial Intelligence in FP&A:
Predicting Margin Deterioration Through Automated Anomaly Detection and Predictive Analytics.

End Goals:

• Developed a proof-of-concept analytics framework capable of identifying margin risks and opportunities using historical financial and operational data.
• Evaluated AI-driven forecasting and anomaly detection techniques and delivered actionable recommendations to support profitability management and decision-making within FP&A.

• AI in Finance:
  Gain hands-on experience applying artificial intelligence and advanced analytics to real-world finance and profitability challenges.
• Predictive Analytics:
  Develop expertise in anomaly detection, forecasting methodologies, and machine learning approaches that support financial decision-making.
• Financial Performance Management:
  Learn how global organizations monitor profitability, identify margin drivers, and translate data into business actions.
• Data Visualization & Business Storytelling:
  Strengthen your analytical, reporting, and communication skills using tools such as Power BI while presenting insights to business stakeholders.
• International Environment:
  Collaborate with finance professionals across a global organization while building expertise in financial analysis, data science, and strategic decision-making.

• Field of Study:
  Master's degree in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, Business Analytics, Financial Economics, Econometrics, Information Management, or a related field.
• Experience:
  
  Experience with statistical analysis, Excel, Power BI, and basic programming in Python, R, or a similar language through academic projects, coursework, or internships.
• Skills:
  
  Strong communication skills, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and an interest in finance and AI.

• Language requirements:
  Fluent in English.
• Final Selection Day: 01.12.2026 in dsm-firmenich office in Maastricht.
• Start of the internship: 01.02.2027
• Duration: 4-5 months.
• Studies: currently enrolled at Maastricht University or Zuyd applied science university (hogeschool). Your university will cosign the internship agreement.
