Position:
Junior Charge Nurse, Band 6, in the Acute Medical Receiving Unit (AMRU) and Medical Assessment Unit (MAU).

Job Overview

The Acute Medical Receiving Unit (AMRU) is a brand‑new service scheduled to open in Summer 2026, designed to deliver high‑quality, rapid assessment and treatment for patients presenting with acute medical conditions. This modern unit will play a key role in improving patient flow, reducing waiting times, and enhancing the overall patient experience. As an experienced registered nurse, the Band 6 will provide clinical leadership, supervision, and support to junior staff, while ensuring safe, effective, and timely patient flow through the unit.

The role requires strong clinical decision‑making skills, the ability to prioritise workload, and effective multidisciplinary team collaboration.

Main Duties
  • Provide high‑quality, patient‑centred care for individuals presenting with acute medical conditions, ensuring safety, dignity, and compassion at all times.
  • Undertake comprehensive clinical assessments, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients with complex and rapidly changing needs.
  • Act as nurse in charge of the shift, coordinating the clinical area, managing patient flow, and supporting timely admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Provide clinical leadership, supervision, and mentorship to Band 5 nurses, healthcare support workers, and student nurses.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective communication and coordinated care delivery.
  • Support patient flow initiatives, including early discharge planning and escalation processes, to optimise bed capacity and reduce length of stay.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant patient documentation.
  • Participate in audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives to enhance patient care and outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control policies and maintain a safe clinical environment.
  • Contribute to staff development, including teaching, training, and supporting competency achievement within the team.
  • Act as a role model, promoting professional standards in line with the NMC Code and Trust values.
  • Support the implementation of new pathways and processes associated with the development of the AMRU service.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (Adult/Child/Mental Health) with current NMC registration.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development and an up‑to‑date portfolio.
  • Teaching, assessing, or mentorship qualification (e.g., ENB 998, Mentorship Module, Practice Assessor).
  • Leadership/management qualification or willingness to work towards one.
  • Evidence of specialist training relevant to the clinical area.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge of evidence‑based practice and national guidance (e.g., NICE, NSF).
  • Understanding of clinical governance, audit, and risk management processes.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, infection prevention and control, and patient safety standards.
  • Advanced clinical assessment and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to coordinate safe admission, transfer, and discharge planning.
  • Strong leadership, team‑building, and supervisory skills.
  • Effective communication skills with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and work under pressure.
  • Competent in IT systems and electronic patient records.
  • Knowledge of budgetary processes and workforce planning.
  • Knowledge of digital systems for patient flow, rostering, and incident reporting.
  • Presentation and teaching skills for education sessions.
  • Skills in service evaluation and change implementation.
Experience
  • Significant post‑registration experience within the relevant clinical specialty.
  • Previous experience mentoring students or supervising junior staff.
  • Experience taking charge or leading a shift.
  • Experience contributing to service improvement or change.
